BREAKING: Official Nigerian Government Website Hacked[UPDATED]

BREAKING: Official Nigerian Government Website Hacked[UPDATED]

The official website of the Nigerian goverment http://nigeria.gov.ng has been hacked. At first the website seemed to be under maintenance as it showed a 404 error.

BREAKING: Official Nigerian Government Website Hacked[UPDATED]

Now there’s a message on the site in Portuguese and it reads this:

“Fatal Error !

by Elemento_pcx & s4r4d0 …

“Seja você mesmo mas não seja sempre o mesmo” … G. o Pensador …

Help ? s4r4d0[at]yahoo.com & elemento_pcx[at]yahoo.com.br”

The message translates to mean

“Fatal Error!

by Elemento_pcx s4r4d0 & …

“Be yourself but not always the same” … G. The Thinker …

Help? s4r4d0 [at] yahoo.com & elemento_pcx [at] yahoo.com.br”

The hack was brought to our knowledge by @gbengasesan via a tweet. This message is quite vague “Be yourself but not always the same” although we know it’s an album title by Gabriel O. Pensador hence the quote attribution to G The Thinker. The album is focused on corruption, police brutality, injustice and generalized submission.

A Google search for the This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. shows its the same email address that was left by hackers in 2009 when the Spelthorne Borough Council in the UK had its website hacked. Another search for This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. shows a Yahoo question from 2 years back with the answer showing that this same email address has been left as a message for other web hacks.

Earlier this year, a couple of hackers with the name NaijaCyberHacktivists took down a couple of Nigerian government websites including the NDDC and NAPEP websites.

At the risk of my email account, I’ve contacted both emails and I’m waiting for a reply. We’ll keep you posted as the news unfolds.

UPDATE: As at 8.00AM Nigerian Time, the website is back up and running. Of course, there’s no official statement concerning what happened or what went wrong. The hackers haven’t replied my email also.
